Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join?
Everyone! No experience is required, but inexperienced fencers are encouraged to take the introductory class offered in the fall and spring.

More information on the next beginner's class will be available in August or early September (or late January/early February on potential spring classes).
Please contact us at if you are interested in joining.
What should I bring to the beginner's class?
Wear: clothes you would work out in (long pants preferred), tennis shoes
Bring: a water bottle
Are there tryouts?
Not for the club, but there are tryouts for the team that travels and competes against other colleges in the Midwest Fencing Conference (you must be a full-time UI student to be eligible for the competitive team).

The club itself, however, is open to ALL individuals affiliated with the UI and you are welcome and encouraged to travel with us to non-collegiate open tournaments.
How many people are on the competitive team?
There are 6 squads:
  • Men's Foil
  • Men's Epee
  • Men's Saber
  • Women's Foil
  • Women's Epee
  • Women's Saber
Each squad has 3 people on it. (Although a 4th person may come as a substitute.)

When is "fencing season"?

All the time! The great part about being an indoor sport is that you can practice all year round.
There is no official fencing season, but summer tends to be a slower time for tournaments. The USA Fencing National Championships are in July and the new fencing season starts in August.

Does the club practice during school breaks?

No, the fencing club only meets while school is in session.

If you are in town during school breaks and would like to practice the ICFC is a great resource all year round.

Are there club dues? How much?
Dues for club membership are $75 for the year. (Keep in mind that some big-city fencing clubs charge $80 a month, so this is an incredible deal.)

The beginner's class is $20. BUT if you take the beginner's class that fee goes towards club dues so you only have to pay an additional $55 if you decide to join.

**Tournament fees are not covered by the club dues.**
Does the club provide all necessary equipment?
Yes, we have equipment for the beginner's class and club members.

Due to high levels of interest, a certain amount of sharing of club equipment will have to occur, especially during the beginners class. Most people choose to buy their own gear if they decide to stick with the sport, and experienced club members are more than happy to help you with this.

The competitive team members are encouraged to purchase their own uniform and at least one electric weapon.
What if I just want to see what's going on before I join?
If you're interested in observing a practice, please contact us in advance. Otherwise, we welcome spectators at our hosted events. Upcoming tournaments are posted on the Events and Calendar pages. Hope to see you there!
